MD/MBA (HOM)

Degree Information

The health care system is changing rapidly. Managed care and other reforms have created a need for physicians with an advanced knowledge of business. To address this need, Texas Tech has initiated the combined MD/MBA (HOM) dual degree plan.

The students will receive both MD and MBA degrees within the four years of medical school. This track will produce outstanding physicians with a greater insight into the intricacies of health care management systems, finance, economics and delivery. With this educational background, physicians will have a much more advanced business background as they develop practices or as they begin careers in management for major health care organizations.

Curriculum

Students will complete the 51-hour MBA (Health Organization Management) Program in four years, including the summers before and after the first-year medical school curriculum. Areas of study will include accounting, management strategy, business decision-making skills and methods, business information systems, as well as other core skills in the business curriculum. For a broader knowledge of the organizational context in which health care is provided, students will complete a seven course concentration in Health Organization Management.
